4-Ethyl Guaiacol is the smell of oak barrels, smoked meat, and aged whisky. It occurs naturally in all of those things — formed when heat breaks down the lignin in wood — and it brings that same warm, smoky, cured quality to perfume compositions. The clove note is prominent but not sharp; it sits underneath a layer of soft vanilla warmth and dry woodsmoke. Use it in leather accords where you want genuine smokiness without the heaviness of birch tar. A trace alongside castoreum or Suederal and you have a smoked leather that smells like it has been sitting in a tannery, not a laboratory.
