Cade oil is the most common alternative to Birch Tar oil but it shouldn't be seen as the poor cousin. In fact Cade Oil (also known as Juniper Tar Oil) has qualities that, to our mind, can make it a superior option. While Birch Tar oil can have an oily quality (and some low class versions - from other suppliers - a decidedly fishy aroma), Cade Tar Oil is drier and bears a stronger resemblance to a freshly extinguished camp fire, ash and all.
