Syringol is what makes wood smoke smell like wood smoke. Its character is intensely smoky and phenolic — charred hardwood, bacon, bonfire — but with a sweet, powdery, almost vanillic warmth underneath that keeps it from turning medicinal. Where guaiacol (its single-methoxy relative) can feel harsh and cough-syrup-like, syringol stays rounded and balsamic. That sweetness makes it far more versatile than raw phenolic smoke materials. In leather accords it provides authentic smokiness without the medicinal edge that can spoil the effect. Tobacco compositions gain a genuine charred-leaf quality.
